Welcome to the Stellenbosch MIKM

The MIKM is your programme if you are serious about designing and managing organisations for the Knowledge Economy of the 21st century. The roots of the Knowledge Economy go back a long time. But it is only in the last decade or two that organisations, and now also governments, came to realise how fundamental knowledge is in the making of our economies and societies. Of course, the information revolution of the last 20 years played a major role in this respect.
The discipline of Knowledge Management (KM) was born around 1995 - not surprisingly in Japan, Europe and the USA. The University of Stellenbosch joined the global debate in the field of KM in 1996. This led to the establishment of the Programme in Information and Knowledge Management (MIKM) in 2000 - the first such programme in Africa, and one of the first in the world. In October 2005 an international committee to externally evaluate the Centre found that the Programme is "...at the forefront of the development of innovative 21st century programmes ...[and is] ahead of most programmes in South Africa and Africa. [The Panel] feels that [the Centre is] within the group of innovators at a world-class level when comparing the programmes with those in the EU and the USA." Definitions of KM vary from narrow (viewing knowledge as an aspect of an organisation) to wide (viewing the organisation as an organic knowledge, and therefore decision-making, agent). The Stellenbosch MIKM follows the wide definition. In fact it goes further and situates its focus on the dynamics of organisational knowledge within the wider frame of the global knowledge economy. This is significant, because it means that the MIKM does not prepare students for only functional knowledge and information management practices in organisations, but also for strategic leadership of organisations. The MIKM is a management programme with a difference - ultimately it aims at preparing managers capable of Thought Leadership.
